Riverview Community Garden Composting Program

Riverview Community Garden has been a staple of the Jersey City Heights neighborhood since 1995, and we have maintained an active composting program for over 15 years. Composting not only reduces the amount of waste producing greenhouse gases in landfills, but also returns vital nutrients to the soil that would otherwise be lost. The compost we produce in our garden goes right back into the earth, improving the quality of the soil itself, and nurturing the plants growing in them, making Riverview a lush green oasis in the middle of all the concrete and asphalt. Jersey City has recently shut down its own composting program, which we had been taking advantage of to supply us with food scraps. We have responded by accepting direct drop-offs during our open-hours on the weekends, but in order to maintain this program we need volunteers who are interested in learning about the composting process and engaging with the community to organize food scrap collection, promote the program and do community outreach, and supervise these drop-offs and help maintain our compost bins.
